Nutrition Program

Children’s Meals
This is where Fountain of Hope Children’s Home all began: plates and plates of lukini phala and nsima! Now that we have two cows, there’s milk. And the chickens provide eggs and meat. From the garden, we serve whatever greens are fresh or tomatoes that are ripe. We do this twice a day, Monday to Saturday, for 200-250 at a time. We don’t have formal tracking in place, but we believe we serve nearly 1,800 from the community.

We sell extra eggs, milk and produce to generate income, but it cannot cover the costs of the nutrition program, which are significant at $950USD/month, so we rely heavily on the generosity of friends and New Life Community Church of Stony Plain.

Gardens of Hope
Our central garden has been such a success that we’ve reached out to Mitundu’s other chiefs with requests for land to begin community gardens. Fountain of Hope provides the tools, seeds and know-how to get the gardens started and then each community maintains their own, giving them a source of fresh nutrition, and pride.

Looking to the Future
Purchasing ground maize, a necessary ingredient in our meals for the children, is expensive. When we’re able, we plan to purchase a maize mill so that we can grind our own and generate income by providing ground maize to others.
