Education Program
Our first school lessons happened “under the big tree”, a beautiful place to learn but quite wet during the rainy season. Fountain of Hope is now registered as an educational institute, with dedicated and qualified teachers. Today, we’re beginning work on a proper four-room schoolhouse. Until the school is finished, the students gather in the community centre to learn. We’ve come a long way.
In Malawi, primary school is provided by the government for free but the infrastructure does not yet exist to do this well. Children are often in classes of 100 students without learning materials, seats, desks and often without schools themselves. Hygiene can be a serious health concern without proper washing facilities. Often children are required to travel unsafe distances to reach school. Private schools offer better learning conditions but at $25USD/month, many families can’t afford it. Secondary education is not free, making it also out of reach for many of Malawi’s children. Fountain of Hope does not charge for education.
Looking to the Future
Today, we educate to grade 4 (standard 4) but our plan is to provide classes through to grade 12 (form 4) and to offer additional technical skills training in marketable trades. We also plan to offer special job-training classes for women so they can support themselves and their families. Many women who were denied a childhood education will share new knowledge and training with other women and their families, in adulthood, furthering the power of learning.
How you can Support our Education Program
Volunteers are welcome in our classrooms. Our students would also love music and sports programs, if that’s something you’d like to help with. Learn more on our Volunteer page.
If you’re able to help financially, buy a desk for our classrooms, or consider a general donation or child sponsorship. Give.
